The Colonel Surfaces

Colonel Sanders pulled from river after 24 years
Statue taken from KFC by crazed Japanese baseball fans after 1985 win

A Colonel Sanders statue which was found in a river is pictured in Osaka, western Japan, on Tuesday night. The statue was pulled from the river, 24 years after being tossed in by crazed baseball fans.

TOKYO - He was covered in mud when pulled from the river, and had lost both legs and hands, not to mention his glasses. But Colonel Sanders still had his trademark smile, 24 years later.

A statue of the KFC mascot has been found in a river in Osaka, a city official said Wednesday, nearly a quarter century after being tossed in by crazed baseball fans who felt the image of restaurant founder Harland Sanders resembled a key team member.

"He was apparently found standing upright, which is fitting, because although he was a nice man he could also be very strict and demanding," said Sumeo Yokakawa, a spokeswoman at the chain's Tokyo headquarters.
She said the statue was taken from a nearby KFC restaurant and tossed in the river as part of a celebration by baseball fans in 1985, the year Osaka's baseball team, the Hanshin Tigers, won the national championship.

Local fans thought the Colonel bore a resemblance to Randy Bass, a bearded power hitter and first baseman from the U.S. who played for the team at the time.

Fans often jump into the murky river to celebrate the team's successes, but there has been little to celebrate in recent years. Many fans feel the team has been plagued by the "curse of Colonel Sanders" since his effigy was submerged in 1985.

It has failed to win a national championship since, although it did win its division in 2003.

The upper half of the statue was found Tuesday in Osaka's Dotonburi River during construction work to build a new walkway, according to city official Hideo Yuko. His legs and right hand were found Wednesday morning.

Colonel in police custody
The colonel will be kept in police custody for the time being, but Yokakawa said KFC is considering donating him to the home stadium of the Tigers in Osaka. The store where he originally stood has since closed.

The KFC chain currently operates about 1,160 restaurants in Japan, and has about 1,000 Colonel Sanders statues in the country.

Osaka, Japan's second-largest city after Tokyo, is located about 260 miles (420 kilometers) west of the capital.

Clone

There appears to be at least one other bloke on this earth who is impersonating me.

Yesterday I was lounging around the pool doing a game of Cribbage with the Mystery Lady (15-2, 15-4, 15-6 ...you get the idea) when this chap comes up to me and says, "Has anyone told you you look like Clive Culling?" I responded with who is Clive Culling? Turns out he is some kinda author....another parallel. Go figure.

The Mystery Lady pipes up with, "Everyone says he looks like Colonel Sanders."

Anyway, I rushed to our villa and cranked up the old Dell and Googled the guy.

Here are pics of me , Clive and Harlan.

You be the judge.

News Flashes

We get the news down here and need to mention "bloggies" in the News! Gary, Billy's favorite humorist and his favorite pizza supplier made the Gazette Saturday. Welcome Marcos Pizza to Cedar Rapids.

The Wine Lizard is in today's Gazette. We had hoped that they would have put a picture of Billy in the Gazette since he was in the center of the room and the photographer had to work around him most of the time.

Of course, there was the Puzzler...but he is always buried on the back page in the lower right corner. I think they put him there because he is a raconteur.
The Puzzler is Billy's Godfather and he usually leaves a message in code form.

Colonel Sanders in the news...He placed 5th out of 1200 oddly costumed revelers last night. Next year he will be back with an updated version. We did get the peoples choice award though, as everyone at breakfast this morning is dumbfounded that it wasn't 1st or 2nd place. Maybe it was our accent that they didn't understand.

The Colonel Pops In

We hit the road and decide it might be a good idea to pop in on one of my stores. We randomly pick the store on SR54 in Land O lakes, FL. I've always had a passion for surprise visits. My employees all like me and always welcome a visit from "the Colonel".

We try to sneak in unnoticed and pretend to be a customer, but these employees saw right through the ruse. As we are placing out order for Original Recipe Chicken dinner, we are recognized and the whole staff wants a piece of me...also original. I pick out the best of them and have them come around the counter for some celebrity shots.

We do a cursory inspection of the kitchen area and verify its "finger lickin good". We sign some autographs and leave as quickly as we arrive. The employees all realize that I put the "U" in KFC. A few actually thought I had died. The Colonel lives.

The next stop would be difficult, as our camera crew would not be allowed to take photos. But rest assured, "The Colonel" was a hit.

Halloween

Bill's favorite holiday is Halloween and this year after looking at my posts, he wants me to dress up like Colonel Sanders. I'm going to do it ...just for him.

Billy would like to dress up too.....hell, I think he'd just like to wear anything sometime. As he get older, he frequently asks to be like the other kids in his class. It just isn't easy to clothe him, so he remains a nudist much to his dislike. He is ever so thankful of his "blanket".

Billy likes to lay behind the door of his apartment and decorate his life support and freak out the little kids when then come trick or treating. Occasionally the kids get so scared they take off running leaving their loot behind to Billy's delight. If weather permit, his mom will put on an old cheerleader uniform and push him around the neighborhood for additional treats.

Fifty-Nine......exceeding the Double nickel

Today's my birthday..well actually an anniversary of my birthday. My birthday was 59 years ago coincidently on this very date. Its no big deal nowadays being 59 years old. But I have now lived 4 years longer than the self imposed prediction of my death. You see my father died at age 55 and his father died at age 55...seems like the double nickel was a tough hurdle. I thought I might come to that same early demise.....so far I've beaten the rap. Its good to be alive. I got a card from Billy....but i knew I would.

P.S. I'm also starting to look like Colonel Sanders.

What's this all about......

This is my lame attempt at blogging and so far I have been able to add posts almost every day......will that continue?........time will tell.

If you scroll way to the bottom you will see "It's all about me" This blog is about me and my friends and my life. Most of it is true.

Some of it is tongue in cheek and some of it is outrageous.

Read the parts you like...if you find something offensive skip over it. If you have any comments, praises or criticisms, email or leave comments...I can take it.
